Cookie policy

Everything this site stores in your browser, and why.

Last updated 15 Aug 2026

Accurate to how the site works today. If advertising or analytics are switched on, this page and the consent position must be revisited first — see the last section.

The short version

We use no advertising or tracking cookies. What we store is either needed to sign you in or remembers a preference you set. That is why you are not being asked to accept anything.

What is stored

NameKindPurpose
Authentication sessionCookieKeeps you signed in. Set only after you sign in; removed when you sign out.
pld-themeLocal storageRemembers light or dark mode. Never leaves your browser.
f1g-adminbarLocal storageRemembers whether an editor collapsed the editing bar. Staff only.

Third parties

Article images load from publishers' own servers, so their servers see the request. That is not a cookie we set, and we send no referrer, but it is worth knowing. Following a link takes you to that publisher, where their cookies and policies apply.

Turning them off

Every browser can block or clear cookies and local storage. Blocking the session cookie means you will not be able to stay signed in; clearing local storage just forgets your theme. Nothing else on the site depends on them.

If this changes

Advertising and paid membership are planned. Ad networks generally set their own cookies, and at that point we would need a consent banner and this table would grow. We are not there yet, and we would rather say so than show a consent box for cookies we do not set.
