Image via Motorsport.comEmerson Fittipaldi, reflecting on his early career, recounted how he became the lead driver for Team Lotus following the tragic death of Jochen Rindt in 1970. At just 23 years old, Fittipaldi was thrust into a leadership role after Rindt's fatal crash during qualifying at Monza, which left him feeling immense pressure but also motivated to succeed. With the full support of team boss Colin Chapman, Fittipaldi quickly proved himself by winning his first Grand Prix at Watkins Glen, helping Lotus secure its fourth world title while Rindt was awarded the drivers' championship posthumously.
Fittipaldi also shared insights into his relationship with Chapman, describing him as a genius who was deeply affected by the loss of drivers, including two-time champion Jim Clark. Despite the pressures of leadership, Fittipaldi felt grateful to have survived a perilous era in motorsport, expressing a sense of privilege to still be alive after losing many friends and colleagues in racing.
