Drivers' championship

The drivers' championship is the season-long points competition between individual drivers, and its winner is the world champion.

Also called world drivers championship, wdc

Points are awarded on finishing position at each race, and the driver with the most at the end of the season takes the title. Ties are broken by count of wins, then second places, and so on.

It is separate from the constructors' championship, and the two are regularly won by different teams' fortunes — a driver can take the title in a car that finishes second among constructors, because only their own points count while their team-mate's also count for the team.
