Mercedes confirms W17 upgrade timeline as development figures emerge

Mercedes has confirmed that it will introduce a significant upgrade package for its W17 car during the upcoming Malaysian Grand Prix. This update comes after the team has lagged behind its competitors in terms of upgrades, having introduced only 26 line items since the Miami Grand Prix, the lowest among the top four teams. In contrast, Ferrari has introduced 39, McLaren 38, and Red Bull 35. The team has not achieved a pole position since mid-July and is looking to regain competitiveness with the new parts.

Trackside engineering chief Andrew Shovlin expressed optimism about the upgrades, stating they hope to make a substantial improvement in performance. While the Azerbaijan Grand Prix will not feature these updates, the team is preparing for a strong showing in Malaysia and the subsequent races. Shovlin noted that the W17 has demonstrated versatility across various circuit types, and the team is eager to return to a position where they can contend for pole positions and victories.
