Delta time
A delta time is a target lap time drivers must stay above under a virtual safety car or in some qualifying situations.
Under a VSC the car's dashboard shows whether the driver is above or below the delta, and dropping below it is a penalty. It is what neutralises the race without bunching the field.
The word is also used loosely on team radio for any time comparison — the gap to a rival, or to a driver's own previous lap.
