Lift and coast
Lift and coast is releasing the throttle before the braking point and letting the car roll, to save fuel and cool the brakes at a small cost in lap time.
A driver is told a target — often a number of metres or a fuel figure — and gives up perhaps a tenth or two a lap to meet it.
It is the least glamorous instruction on team radio and one of the most common. A car that cannot reach the end on fuel does not finish, so a slower lap is always the better trade.
