Pit window

A pit window is the range of laps during which stopping makes strategic sense.

It opens once the tyre has enough life behind it that the next set will reach the end, and closes when degradation has cost more than the stop would. Teams compute it live and it moves with the race — a safety car can throw it open early.

"Coming into the window" on a broadcast means a stop is now plausible, not imminent. Being forced to stop outside it, through damage or a puncture, is usually what ruins a race rather than the incident itself.
