The definition is looser than it sounds — a driver who made a handful of substitute appearances the previous year is still usually called one in their first full campaign.

The regulations require teams to run a driver with no more than two race starts in a number of practice sessions each season, which is where most rookies get their first laps in a current car on a race weekend.
