Mercedes defends its decision to reject crucial FIA driver aid
Image via Motorsport.comMercedes has defended its choice to reject the FIA's financial allowance for developing liquid-cooled driver vests, which was intended to help combat extreme heat during races. Deputy team principal Bradley Lord explained that the team prioritised performance over driver comfort, believing the allowance was insufficient to create a reliable solution. Both George Russell and Lewis Hamilton had previously struggled with heat in their cockpits, but the drivers agreed with the decision to focus on maximizing car speed instead.
Unfortunately, this strategy backfired when Russell had to retire from the race due to a power unit failure, which could lead to engine penalties in future events. Lord expressed concern over the implications of this setback, indicating that it could significantly impact Russell's performance for the remainder of the season.
