Gearbox
Formula 1 cars use a semi-automatic sequential gearbox operated by paddles behind the steering wheel, with shifts taking a few thousandths of a second.
Also called paddle shift
Sequential means gears are taken in order rather than selected freely, and the driver has no clutch pedal — the clutch is a paddle used only for the start.
Gearboxes have a mandated life across multiple events, and replacing one outside that allocation used to carry an automatic grid penalty. The component-allocation principle still applies across the power unit.
