Retirement

A retirement is when a car stops before the end of the race, whether through mechanical failure, damage or an accident.

Also called dnf, did not finish

Recorded as DNF — did not finish. The distinction from DNS (did not start) and DSQ (disqualified) matters in the record books, since only one of the three is bad luck.

A retired driver can still be classified if they completed enough of the distance, which is why a car that stopped on lap 50 of 58 can appear in the results with a position rather than a blank.
