Apex

Hitting it is not the goal in itself — carrying speed out of the corner is. A driver who turns in early reaches the apex sooner and compromises the exit; one who turns in later sacrifices entry speed to straighten the car earlier and get on the power sooner.

That is why commentators talk about a "late apex". Where a corner leads onto a long straight, exit speed is worth more than anything gained on the way in, and the ideal line moves accordingly.
