Pit lane

The pit lane is the restricted road running alongside the track where teams have their garages and cars stop for tyres and repairs.

A strict speed limit applies — typically 80km/h, lower at some circuits — and exceeding it is an automatic penalty. The limit is why the true cost of a pit stop is far more than the seconds the car is stationary.

Releasing a car into the path of another is an "unsafe release" and is penalised, sometimes with a stop-go. The lane closes under some red-flag conditions, and a car serving a penalty passes through it without stopping.
